Freeport status in the port of Tangier The New Commercial Port of Tangier enjoys a Freeport status which allows companies to import and export goods without duties or tax. Located adjacent to the Freeport is 243 Hectares of land which has been designated a commercial tax free zone; this is currently being developed into a modern commercial and industrial centre following high demand from a large number of industries and companies.
A major contract by the Tanger Mediterranean Special Agency (TMSA) of Morocco has been awarded to provide an integrated maritime security system for the brand new port Tanger Med. Thanks to this state-of-the-art port security system, Tanger Med will reach the best levels of security to go far beyond the requirements of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code and the European Directive 65/2005.
The deployment of the security system will start beginning of 2008 and will be finalised in 2011. Ideally located on the straits of Gibraltar, this port is an outstanding industrial achievement, and its activity will profoundly reshape the economical environment of northern Morocco, as well as western Mediterranean marine commercial patterns.

Designed to face carefully analysed threats, the system features seaside surveillance based on field-proven detection and identification sensors. Landside protection is ensured by layers including perimeter fences, intelligent video-surveillance, and an access control system including biometry, fully consistent with commercial port operations. The versatility of IMARSECTM suite of sub-systems, monitored and activated from a sole control room, is particularly adapted to the diversity of the commercial activity of Tanger Med, including containers, oil products, bulk freight, Ro-Ro, not to forget the millions of inter continental passengers.
The port of Tanger Med has the ambition of becoming the most significant container hub in the Mediterranean taking advantage from its highly strategic location at the crossroads of major East-West North-South shipping routes. |
